India's Climate Challenges and How Premium Windows Solve Them

India is not one climate. It's dozens — and the window system that works beautifully in Bangalore can fail miserably in Mumbai. Here's how to think about specification by region.

Coastal — Mumbai, Goa, Chennai, Kerala

Salt-laden air corrodes ordinary aluminium and degrades hardware. Specify anodised or marine-grade powder-coated finishes (45+ micron), stainless steel rollers and locks, and tested water-tightness for driving rain (≥600 Pa). Avoid uncoated mild steel hardware entirely.

North Indian extreme — Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan

Summers above 45°C followed by winters at 0°C punish single-pane glass and unbroken aluminium frames. Specify thermal-break frames + double-glazed units with low-E coating. The thermal break alone can swing inside surface temperatures by 8–12°C, eliminating condensation and dramatically improving HVAC efficiency.

Hill stations — Shimla, Manali, Ooty

The wind loads here can be brutal — sustained 100+ km/h gusts during storms. Specify systems tested to AAMA structural standards (typically ≥3500 Pa wind load). Use multi-point locking on all operable panels. Casement and awning windows perform better than sliders in high-wind conditions because their seals compress under wind pressure.

Humid East — Kolkata, Assam

Persistent humidity attacks wood (rot) and steel (rust). Aluminium with proper drainage detailing is the obvious answer. Specify weep holes in the bottom frame to drain condensation, and ensure all internal joints are sealed with neutral-cure silicone (acidic-cure silicones can corrode aluminium over time).

Bangalore / Pune — temperate

The easiest specification. Standard aluminium systems with single-glazed clear glass work, but you'll get noticeably better acoustic performance and energy savings with double glazing. Worth it if the property faces a main road.

The takeaway
